Speaking at DevCon in 3 weeks

I’m speaking at the BlackBerry Developer’s conference in San Francisco in three weeks.

    Here’s my session description:
    New BlackBerry User Interface Elements

This session will provide an overview and demonstration of both new and updated UI elements introduced in BlackBerry® Java® Development Environment v5.0. We’ll look at the history of UI development for the BlackBerry solution, the challenge of developing user interfaces for the BlackBerry® platform, new UI elements such as rich components, containers, as well as APIs to enhance an application’s look and feel. Sample code and applications will be offered.

It sounds geeky I know. If you are a mobile developer for any platform, this conference is worth going to. Mobile devices are already a major platform to deliver live and relevant content. Your phone is with you wherever you go so eventually, your phone will know more about you than any other device or even person!

The avatar was created with RIM’s conference avatar creator. It’s almost literally how I look everyday at work. http://avatar.rimconferenceresources.com/avatar.htm

    RANSOM by adidas Originals

This is the commercial I helped shoot a few weeks ago. This was Warren Credo’s vision for the new Adidas brand, Ransom.

I did most of the shots in the woods and outdoor areas, but my favorite shots were actually the ones I didn’t do: the night time city shots.

I got co-director of photography credits along with John Palanca. John also edited the shots and did a fantastic job.

We shot it with our camera along with Joel’s custom built slider.

Neon Gorilla for Ransom x Adidas Originals

    Director and Editor: Warren Credo
    Producer: Jason Reid (Ransom)
D.O.P: John Palanca and Ray Mendoza (5E)
Talent: Justin Create and Kenneth Sim

Purpose: To advertise the various styles of footwear in the Adidas x Ransom collaborative series.

    CrackBerry Therapy

With some friends one night, we shot a video for the “I Love My CrackBerry” video contest for crackberry.com.

The concept is group therapy for BlackBerry addicts. Crackberry.com chooses 10 finalists, then the public votes. You never know how these videos are judged so we can’t be disappointed if we don’t get selected for the finals. Regardless, we had fun shooting it.

      Here’s some lunchtime distraction: http://crackberry.com/iluvbb/entries.html

Those are all the entries to the contest.

      A few standouts include:

#77 Deaf Skydiver: he jumps out a plane and uses his BB and he’s deaf. That’s certainly the most unique one.
#17 Scent of a BB: has special effects.
#33 Applecalypse: iphone zombies attack BB users.

They’ll slowly start announcing finalists starting today.

    Jayden the posing builder

Jayden likes Bob the Builder lately. He looks like such a poser in this shot. I was having trouble keeping him still as usual.

    Google Wave initial thoughts

In my first impression, Google Wave is not meant to be

    • a mass social media tool.
    • a gossip channel
    • a spy on ‘friends’ or celebrities tool

    It is

    • useful for a smaller network of people you actually interact with. It would be similar to your BlackBerry Messenger list.
    • a collaboration tool
    • a conversational way to form ideas or discuss events
    • a multimedia conversation collaboration tool

I don’t really have anyone to wave with since the people I work with did not get invitations. I did have one Wave with the famous-to-geeks Robert Scoble. He had this to say about Wave.

I actually do look forward to having conversations and creating ideas this way. I just hope Google doesn’t steal those ideas!

OK screenshots below. They are also on Flickr:
